The newest and most spectacular addition to Cancun is the Underwater Sculpture Museum. In 2009 the first steps of a monumental underwater sculptural museum were formed in the surrounding waters of Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc. The project will eventually consist of 400 life-size sculptures and will form a complex reef structure for marine life to colonise and inhabit.

Each of the sculptures will be made from specialized materials used to promote coral life, with the total installation occupying an area of over 150sq meters and weighing over 120 tons. The main goal of this project is preservation. As the sculptures promote the growth of new corals and marine life, this will help rescue many of Cancun's reef areas which have been damaged by hurricanes and mankind.

The construction of the underwater museum has been divided into 3 phases and was inaugurated in November 2009 by the placement of 3 sculptures; The Gardener of Hope, Dream Collector and Man of Fire. Gardener of Hope, the one with the girl lying on the patio, is located on Punta Nizuc, while the other two are located at dive site Manchones Reef.

Beginners and certified divers can visit the Dream Collector and Man of Fire with Aquaworld Marina Cancun. The Gardener of Hope sculpture can be seen on Aquaworld's Paradise Snorkel tour. The second stage of the museum will be submerged in July 2010 and this will consist of 200 more sculptures.

The Cancun Underwater Museum is located off the shore of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. It can be reached by boat from Cancun.

The Cancun Underwater Museum was created by Underwater Sculpture Artist Jason DeCaires Taylor, and it was made to relieve the coral reef dive sites from the many divers and snorkelers that may affect the development of it. The museum is a vast area of sculptures that change as life grows on them.

The sculptures are part of Cancun's Underwater Museum which began back in 2009.  There are now over 400 figures submerged in the surrounding waters of Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

The sculpture museum's main goal is conservation, they are made of PH neutral clay which promotes the growth of coral and attracts marine life. It's also an awesome dive site if you have the chance to visit.
