Cancun is one of Mexico's most crowded and popular tourist destinations with a wide ring of huge resort, called the Hotel Zone and Cancun City or el Centro. All hotels at the Zona Hotelera have their own private beach located next to the warm tropical ocean. On the other side they are separated from the more traditional town of downtown Cancun by a lagoon named Nichupe. The weather is tropical all year long with August to November being the rainy season with sometimes monsoons.
Cancun is a tourist paradise with hotels, trendy bars, classy restaurants in all luxuries and price classes. You can visit the Interactive Aquarium, there are golf courses, shopping malls such as Plaza las Americas, sport fishing trips and handicraft markets. Tours throughout Yucatan are offered with the Mayan archeological sites of Chichen Itza being the most popular. The popular fishermen's island Isla Mujeres with its splendid white beaches and Isla Holbox which is separated by a shallow lagoon from the mainland, are some of the fantastic islands nearby.
There is some excellent scuba diving and snorkeling around Isla Mujeres, i.e. El Garrafon and there are several sunken ships nowadays transformed into rich artificial reefs with plenty of marine life. Especially beautiful are the dive sites off northern Punta Cancun, San Toribio, San Miguel, Banderas and La Boya de los Locos. While diving here you might spot hawksbill sea turtles, crocodiles, lemon sharks and manatees. The rich Mesoamerican Reef is also home to most of the common and well known tropical reef fish. Snorkeling is a great way to explore the underwater ocean world as many parts of the reef are shallow situated on white sand with perfect light and color conditions.
