Diving in Mexico is scuba diving and snorkeling at locations next to the Great Mesoamerican Reef (the Gran Arrecife Maya), being the second largest barrier reef in the world stretching from the northern tip of Yucatan all the way to the Bay of Islands in Honduras. Most scuba diving and dive sites are found in the Mayan Riviera, the coastal stretch between Cancun and Tulum. Well established dive destinations in Yucatan include the island Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Akumal. One of the extra rewards, Yucatan is blessed with, are its cenotes, formed because of flooded cave systems that were created millions of years ago in Yucatan's porous limestone surface area. The south of the Baya California offer many dive sites that are popular for the many colonies of sea lions and seals that live here. Other areas where diving is possible are Puerto Vallarta and Ixtapa. The Mexican Caribbean Sea is one of high visibilities, waters of 26 degrees Celsius and a world renowned paradise for divers and beach fanatics.

A popular area in Mexico is Cancun with its Hotel Zone and millions of visitors each year shopping, sunbathing and enjoying the many activities arranged for tourists. The island Cozumel, in front of Playa del Carmen, is the best place to dive in Mexico and became famous when Jacques Cousteau pronounced it to be one of the hidden gems in the world in 1961. Acapulco is famous for the Quebrada Cliff Divers who perform their daily dives from 37 meter high cliffs in the shallow ocean below, often with candles and doing trick in mid air. The beach town Puerto Escondido, Los Cabos in the Baja California, the cool highland region around San Christobal and the capital Mexico City offer many daytrips that will suit any traveler. With idyllic beaches, natural reefs and crystal clear waters you will experience everything Mexico can offer.

There are many other things to do in Mexico besides scuba diving, sitting on the white hot sand and getting wet in the warm tropical ocean. Yucatan houses several phenomenal attractions including the eco-archaeological park of Xcaret and Xel-Ha, an outdoor water theme park complete with mangroves, bird watching, stingray swimming, diving and snorkeling lessons. You can take a ride up the Copper Canyon Railway or enjoy the white beauties of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. If you are interested in archeological sites don't miss Chitzen Itza, Coba, Tulum and the large pyramids of Teotihuacan.
